Architecture student wins Future Vision 09
James West, a student at the Manchester School of Architecture, has won the top prize at Future Vision 09.
His idea – the Edible Terrace - is a sustainable interpretation of the Victorian terrace house. The self-sustaining living quarters are designed to reduce food miles and energy consumption and encourage urban food production and healthy eating.
As well as overall winner, James won the Future Buildings category that singles out innovative ideas that can transform the way we design and build.
Part of his prize is a four-week work placement with Rok – the nation’s local builder.
James West said:
"Winning this award has been amazing and has really motivated me to learn more about sustainable communities. I hope that one day the edible terrace may become a reality and it will be an incredible achievement if my idea helps to improve the environment and the lives of residents."
James was one of five winners announced at the awards ceremony, staged in conjunction with the ‘Homes and Communities Academy Awards’ – the national awards scheme that celebrates projects that have combined innovation and dedication to improving communities.
Each winner was rewarded with a cash prize and a four-week work placement at leading organisations: Gateway; Gentoo; Hemingway Design; Merton and Rok.
Gill Taylor, the HCA Academy Chief Executive, said:
"The volume and quality of award entries this year has been remarkable. Generating new, workable ideas that capture the essence of economic, social and environmental regeneration and help improve communities up and down the country is no mean feat. Once again, it’s encouraging to see that so many young people are passionate about improving places."
Hosted by broadcaster Moira Stewart, the event was attended by 550 representatives from public, private and voluntary organisations in the homes and communities sector.

New sponsor signs up.
The Gentoo Group supports Future Vision for the second year running.
We're delighted that the Gentoo Group is supporting Future Vision again. They've agreed to sponsor the Green Thinking category that focuses on environmentally-friendly solutions for everyday living.
Gentoo is an award winning people and property business. The company inspires local people to create a climate in which they themselves can help generate great communities.
Future Vision 2008 award winner Stephen Ferguson enjoyed a successful work placement with Gentoo. Here's what he had to say:
"Gentoo is involved in social housing regeneration. They do more than just build properties - they invest in the community by creating social incentives and jobs for residents. During my placement I got chance to work on a live project - the passive homes scheme. This project engineers new innovations to create homes that require virtually no heating. The placement gave me an incredible insight into all aspects of planning, construction, sustainability and social responsibility."
Sharon Appleby at Gentoo said:
"Stephen got involved in lots of aspects of our work. He visited housing schemes; worked in the tenant support department; learned about a programme that helps young homeless people to secure jobs, housing and financial support; met our victim support and business venture incentives teams; and went to the Riverside Stadium to see what youth projects we're involved in. Young people have some fantastic ideas about improving places and we're looking forward to working with another Future Vision winner."
